Subject: mpd24 doesn't work with digital performer for mac
Hi,
I've been on hold with tech support for the past hour and a
half so I'm trying email.
I also tried to register my product but there's no dropdown option
for the MPD24, so I chose the MPD16.
I can't get Reason or Digital Performer to recognize the Akai
MPD24 on the mac.
Digital Performer doesn't 'see' the instrument for MIDI input, and
doesn't honor the MMC transport controls sent from the
MPD. I have MMC turned on in Digital Performer but in Control
Service Setup > Add Driver there's only HUI, Mackie Control and
Radikal SAC listed. I'm using Digital performer 5.0.
As for Reason, it hears 1-channel MIDI input from the pads but I
can't get it set up as the remote. It doesn't listen to the
MMC transport controls either. I put MPD24.remotemap in /Library/
Application Support/Propellerhead Software/Remote/
Maps/Akai (I assume the documentation meant /Library... and not
~/Library..., though neither worked) and the Akai folder in /
Library/Application Support/Propellerhead Software/Remote/Codecs/
Lua Codecs.
Reason does not detect the surface and
when I try to add it, Akai is not listed under manufacturers and I
don't see
the Akai icon. I'm using Reason 3.0 on a G5.
Thanks for your help,
Jordan
Hi,
Does it show up under the Audio properties as a midi controller?
The computer must know it's there first.

Thanks for your reply.
I was able to get it working as a remote for Reason, I didn't
realize I had to upgrade to 3.0.5, oops.
The MPD24 and its three ports does show up in Audio/Midi setup, but
I can't get DP to recognize it as a source for MMC (DP only lists
HUIs and mackies). It will respond if I have Reason open via rewire,
but do you know of any way to get it working straight with the MPD?
Thanks,
Jordan
Hi,
That would be a setup question for Reason. It needs to receive MMC
via the midi port the MPD is connected to.

Not Reason, Digital Performer. Do you guys have a driver for digital
performer so it can recognize it as a control surface, like you made
one for Reason?
Jordan
HI,
Sorry about that. But, there are no drivers for individual
programs. The MPD24 is simply plug and play. It shows up as a usb midi device.
If there is no template for DP then you would have to create one yourself or
check on line forums that someone else has made one.

I know the mpd 24 is plug and play. Can you verify that the transport
works with Digital Performer? For instance, I know that it's not
actually a driver that allows the MPD24 to control Reason, but you
guys did release a reason remote map file as well as a luacodec file
that allows it to work with Reason. That's beyond the capability of
your average user. I'm saying that the same is true for Digital
Performer, if it were just setting up the MPD24 as an input I would
be able to do it, but I think DP needs some kind of map file for the
mpd 24 to allow it to recognize the transport. I've tried and it's
not working. I'm a subscriber of several DP groups and forums and no
one has a solution. Can you verify that there is a way to get DP to
listen to the MPD's MMC messages?
Jordan
HI,
I would agree that there should be a template for DP. I can pass
it on to the powers that be. On the other hand it's only 14 knobs/sliders
that need to be assigned to functions on your soft synth. That's not very
many. If I had DP I'd do it myself.

I'm talking about the transport, it's not working, not the 14 knobs
and sliders. The transport. Play, stop, rewind, fast forward, record.
It's not working.
Jordan
Hi,
There is no mapping changes for the transport controls. Any Play CC# or
stop CC# is universal. There is nothing you need to do on the MPD for that.
All setup is done in DP. It has to know what the control device is, have
mmc turned as well as midi timecode or midi clock turned on.

Right, that's correct, and I'm saying I can't set up DP correctly without a Digital Performer Control Surface driver from you guys. Please see the attached screenshot.
In MIDI Monitor, it sees the Akai MPD24, and if I press play the "CO" light turns on, but nothing happens.
In Control Surface, it's not listed as an option under Driver because there's no driver for it.
In Preferences > Receive Sync, it's not listed as an option for Sync to port:, even though it is installed on the system correctly.
And when I turn on MIDI Machine Control, it doesn't work.
I understand you don't have digital performer and this is beyond the scope of the support you can give me. Please pass this on and let the designers know that they need to support this major DAW platform.
I don't need to hear back from you again about how it *should* work, I'll just look forward to seeing a driver release from you guys.
Thank you,
Jordan
