In Memory of Edd Balagot

Posted on Saturday 19 June 2010

My Father, Edd Balagot, passed away on May 20 2010 after a long battle with cancer. We are having a memorial for him this Sunday, June 20, at 1 PM, please contact me for details. Dad has always been supportive of everything I do and was an inspiration to me as a human being. I’ve been taking some time off of composing and work and appreciate my friends, family and work being so supportive during this time. Below is his obituary which was published today.

Edgar Antonio (Edd) Balagot passed away on May 20, 2010.

Edd was born on March 12, 1950 in Chicago to Reuben and Lourdes Balagot. He was a 1968 graduate of Francis W. Parker High School and went first to the University of Illinois-Chicago and then to Goddard College in Vermont, where he finished with a Master’s degree in Psychology. After holding the position of co-director at Maple Hill School for some years, Edd returned to Chicago where he switched careers and raised his children.

Everyone who knew him will remember and miss his sense of humor, his love and talent for music, and his penchant for a good story that led to a lifelong affinity for comic books, movies, and novels.

Edd was preceded in death by his father, Reuben C. Balagot.

He is survived by his daughter Rowan, his son Jordan, his mother Lourdes, an entire extended family, and a very large crew of friends.

A memorial service will be held at 1 PM on June 20, 2010. Please contact Jordan for details at 773 742 4400.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Rainbow Hospice, 444 N. Northwest Highway, Suite 145, Park Ridge IL 60068.

Don’t worry. He’ll always be with you, and you’ll find him when you look. One of my favorite tactics is to find an element in nature that reminds you of his spirit- because those things show up everywhere, forever. Love.

    Jordon,

I worked with your dad at Maplehill community. In fact, I became the director when he and Maija left. Edd had an infectious sense of humor and a vast enthusiasm for life. The kids at Maplehill adored him, as did we, the adults. He was all about having fun. And…………..he put on a hell of a fireworks show. Very sorry for the loss of your dad.

    Dear Jordan,
You probably have never heard of me. I was Edd’s first roommate at Goddard, Miaja being the second. I have nothing but happy memories of the time spent with Edd that first year.
My wife and I have given a little gift to Rainbow Hospice in rembrance and would like to offer our condolences to the Balagot’s family.
    Truly yours,

Jordan, I’m sure you don’t remember me, bu I was a friend of your father’s at Montgomery Ward and sat with you at a Ravinia concert one summer. He was very well-liked and respected there, known for his quick offers of help to anyone who needed it, his silly sense of humor and infectios giggle. He and I co-directed the Montgomery Ward Christmas choir, which rehearsed several days each week for sevearl weeks before the holiday, and th performed at various places throughout the Ward coplex. He called the group the Norman Chubby-Knuckle Choir, after one of the upper managers whose last name wasMr.Norman. The name never really caught on, but the coirhr was actually pretty good, and a lot of fun!I sure hope he didn’t suffer much;I was praying for him often. He told ne that the food thing about cancer was that he was able to spend more time with his kids. He was SO proud of your music, frequently sending mass emails to alert us to your latest composition.. Best wishes to you and Rowan. Losing a parent is increibly difficult, and I can sympathise with pain you’re having now, and thatwill continue in the future, esp. around hholidays. You”kids” were the lves of his ife, and i’m dure he is still watching you now and loving you.
