I LOVE Pandora

Posted on Wednesday 17 January 2007

How many hours have you spent going through your itunes library, looking up an artist in the mini store, and then clicking on related artists to discover new music?

If you’re like me, then it’s several.

Well, I found a better way to do this, for free, online. It’s called Pandora. Now, instead of digging through shitty podcasts or listening to 10 second samples of music in the store, you simply go to their website, type in an artist you like, and start listening and rating as you go. As you rate, your playlist dynamically changes, based on over 400 musical qualities. Each track is tagged manually by a team of analyists. The site is powered by the Music Genome Project. There’s no registration required to start listening, but you’ll want to (for free) later to save your playlists.
Currently I’m listening to a playlist generated by typing in Chucho Valdes. It’s awesome. My only complaint so far is that the rating system is boolean (yes/no) and not more complicated (like 1-5, or rating the attributes you like/don’t like). However it’s still doing a great job. As I fine tune my playlists I’ll share them on here.

I don’t know how they get the licenses to do this (maybe because you can’t download them, and there are limits to how many songs you can skip), but I’m thrilled with this service. Check it out!
